Rebaling hay, the practice of converting big round bales into small square bales, has gained popularity among farmers seeking to optimize hay production. In a previous article, Reed Graham from Holly Creek Farms shared insights into their rebaling process, sparking curiosity among viewers.

Today, we feature a video from Hammer Hay YouTube channel, showcasing their unique approach using the Hustler Unrolla bale unroller. It’s worth noting that all Hustler bale unrollers can be adapted for rebaling, offering flexibility to farmers.

If you’re new to rebaling hay, you can explore the benefits of this system in our introductory article.

Hammer Hay is based in Minnesota, United States and employs the Hustler SL360X bale unroller, now succeeded by the Unrolla LX105 with enhanced features.

As demonstrated in the video, the entire setup is conveniently housed in the farm’s hay shed, enabling year-round operation regardless of weather conditions. This hands-on approach allows Hammer Hay to tailor the system to their specific needs while maximizing efficiency.

The Hustler unroller, positioned on a platform constructed from an old trailer, facilitates easy loading of round bales via a skid steer. Once the twine or net wrap is cut, the unroller smoothly guides the hay onto a conveyor belt system, transporting it to a John Deere 336 baler equipped with an accumulator grapple system.

To ensure optimal performance, Hammer Hay made crucial adjustments, focusing on the height of the unroller and the speed of the conveyor belt. Regular cleaning around the PTO joint is emphasized to prevent overheating and ensure long-lasting operation.

While the system can be operated by as few as two people, a team of four enhances efficiency. Each team member plays a vital role, contributing to a steady flow and an impressive output of approximately 6 round bales per hour, equivalent to 120 small square bales.

The beauty of this rebaling setup lies in its versatility. Besides converting round bales into small squares, the Hustler unroller can serve as a standalone system for efficiently feeding livestock, making it a valuable investment for farms with diverse needs.

Looking ahead, Hammer Hay aims to optimize the process further, exploring upgrades such as a larger conveyor.

while rebaling hay may not be suitable for every farm, for Hammer Hay, it’s a game-changer. It opens new markets, enhances hay quality, and exemplifies the principle of working smarter, not harder.
